Whichever option you choose, you have to go through the sign-up pages where you will be asked about your birthday, name, and gender. Then you are required to enable your phone's location to continue using the app. You have to disclose your gender preference – whether you're looking for men, women, or both in the app, plus determine the ideal age range of your potential matches.

Once you have completed those steps, you are required to add a profile photo – no nudity, minors, or group photos allowed – then upload a selfie for verification of identity. This selfie is for Iris's internal verification team only and won't be visible to the app users.

The final step of the sign-up process is to "Train Iris", so the app can prioritize matching you with users that fit your ideal type. Training Iris has three phases that have the same procedure. The app will show you more than 20 stock photos in each phase, which you need to decide whether to hit 'Pass', 'Maybe', or 'Like' each photo. Based on user reviews, there is one issue that prevents most users from fully enjoying the app. The issue is they can't find nearby users or all their matches seem to be on the other side of the country. Iris Dating insists that it is not a glitch in the app, rather it's just because there are no nearby members in their locations. When we tested the app, we were in New York City. We checked the Iris Lineup, and there were no nearby users in one of the most populous states in the US. Could it be that there were just no users in the Big Apple?

Iris Dating profiles don't say anything much about the person except for their likes and dislikes. There's also an 'About Me' paragraph if the user wants to tell more about him or herself.
